The Crowded-Lonely Planet

The current world population is estimated to be 6,852,472,823 people, as of December 2011.  If one were to calculate the population density of the world, the density being a measurement of population per unit area or unit volume, the number may not seem so overwhelming.  Each person would be spread over a small space of land.  You'd probably be able to see everyone around you, but would you be close enough to speak?  Instead, people pile on top of each other like swarms of honey bees fighting to please the queen or a pile of ants trampling towards their exit, crawling over each other with no regard for the well being of their counter parts.

The city with the highest population in the world is Shanghai which has is 17,836,133 people, that is a population density of 6,845 per square kilometre....literally, living on top of each other.

Here, people live side by side, in meticulous little rows in their perfect square houses and their little plot of land.  They see their neighbours every day and either nod hello or pretend they are so busy they don't see each other.  People live with their families and their pets and forget about the rest of the bees in the world fighting for a place in the hive, fighting for even one cell.

I wonder...in the crowded cities, like Shanghai, Istanbul or Mumbai, are the people less distant?  Emotionally I mean?  Do they live in crowded places physically yet crowd each others lives with love and friendship?

Let me ask you, what would be better; to be in a room full of people and feel the warmth of their presence and the safety of their friendship or in a room full of people and fell completely alone?

What would it be like to be the loneliest girl in a room full of people?

  1. Interesting. I lived in an apartment building once and met a woman who was from South America - don't remember which country. She was very lonely, especially when her husband was on the boats because in her crowded country people were in and out of each other's houses all of the time. Doors were always open. She didn't understand the Cdn tendency to shut the door on our neighbours.

Maybe we like our privacy or maybe we are just got used to keeping the cold wind out???

    We're a reserved bunch.
